Alix Aymé (French, 1894-1989)

Born in Marseille, Aymé studied music and drawing and she was a pupil of artist Maurice Denis. In 1920, she married her professor, Paul de Fautereau-Vassel, with whom she accompanied to Shanghai and Hanoi. She taught drawing at the French lycée in Hanoi.  Upon returning to France in 1926, she separated from her husband and returned to Indochina on a mission ordered by the French government in order to prepare for the International Colonial Exhibition of 1931.

 

There, she got remarried to Colonel Georges Aymé, and then traveled to Laos where she painted and then became a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Indochina.  Aymé is a pioneering female artist during the Modern art era.
