Originally from the south of France, Jean Gauchet comes from a line of art collectors and dealers. After helping his family in their fine art and Western decoration business in Nice and Miami, he then traveled to Shanghai to study the Asian art market. He continued his studies in art history at Northeastern University in Boston. Fluent in French, English, Spanish, Italian and Chinese, Jean has built up a varied clientele that includes collectors from Europe, but also from Asia, North America, Africa and the Middle East.
Jean Gauchet has a keen eye which allows him to discover and highlight exceptional works. Thanks to his experiences in different fields of the art world, he brings his expertise to auction houses, private collectors, museums and large companies around the world. He is a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society of London and is an expert in Asian art for the European Chamber of Experts-Conseil in Works of Art in Paris (CECOA). In addition to providing his skills to professionals and individuals, Jean is also the main Asian art expert for the Millon auction house in Paris, organizing quarterly sales and providing his expertise to clients.
Each year, Jean Gauchet publishes a catalog which presents his personal works as well as those entrusted to him. By promoting an artistic dialogue between the East and the West, it offers its readers the opportunity to learn more about the works as well as the context in which they were produced. This collection is presented each year at the Hong Kong International Antiques Fair as well as at Asia Week in London and Paris. Among the notable moments of his career are the auction sale of a work sold for 3,250,000 euros, a record amount for the year 2019, his participation in the annual “Sotheby's Young Dealer” event organized by the auction house Sotheby's international auction, management of the catalog and sale of the Spoerry collection as well as its participation in the Hong Kong fair as the first contributor.
