Le Thi Luu (Vietnamese, 1911-1988)

Born in Tho Khoi, ha Bac province, Le Thi Luu studied at the School of Fine Arts in Indochina in 1927 and graduated five years later. During these years of study, she befriended certain comrades and future influential artists such as Le Pho, Mai Thu and Vu Cao Dam, as well as with her main teacher Victor Tardieu.  On a trip to France followed by a trip to Africa as Vietnam entered the colonial war, the temporarily blocked Suez Canal prevented her from returning to her homeland. She then decided to return to France and settle in Gentilly with her husband and son.

She was a part of a small group of Vietnamese painters who emigrated to France to pursue an artistic career during this tumultuous period.  She was a teacher at the Buoi school where she taught the future great artist Phan Ke An, alongside other famous teachers such as To Ngoc Van and Nguyen Tuong Lan.  Le Thi Luu traveled a lot in France and drew her inspiration from her discoveries of landscapes and the local populations in the South of France, giving free rein to her talent as a portrait painter gifted for an increased representation of rural populations.
