Li Keran (Chinese, 1907-1989)

Born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province to illiterate parents, Keran studied painting alongside a local painter from an early age and then continued his studies at the Shanghai Academy from where he graduated in 1925.  In 1929, he entered the National Academy of Arts in Hangzhou to study Western arts. The academy was then directed by Lin Fengmian who taught Keran oil painting. Keran also attended art courses by the French professor and painter André Claudot. 

 

In 1946, he was invited by Xu Beihong to teach at the National Academy of Arts in Peping, where he received additional informal instruction from Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong.  His style is very distinctive and his favorite subject is landscape painting using a western painting technique.
