Mai Thu
(French-Vietnamese, 1906-1980)
Born in 1906 in Ro Nha, Thu was a member of the first class of the School of Fine Arts of Indochina in Hanoi with fellow artist Le Pho. During his education, he developed a particular style that would differentiate him from his colleagues throughout his career. He painted in gouache on silk and applied spots of organized colors to form clothes and fleshy parts oj his subjects. In 1937, he visited France for an exhibition.
He then settled there for the rest of his career and made a name for himself as a painter of languid children and women. Some of his major works are found in museums, notably the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, as well as in numerous private collections around the world.
