Nguyen Gia Tri
(Vietnamese, 1909-1993)

Tri is considered one of the most avant-garde artists of lacquer work in Vietnam. In 1932, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Indochina and graduated five years later. He then lived in Hong Kong and after settled in Saigon in 1954. He began his career first oil painting on canvas, and then transitioned to lacquer. He then brought his pictorial technique to its peak, and between 1939 and 1945, he produced a large number of panels, screens and doors in an extremely organized workshop surrounded by teams of craftsmen and lacquerers.
