The young girl was one of the favorite themes of the pioneer artist of Vietnamese modern art Mai Thu (1906-1980) throughout his career. It is a strong theme for the artists from the Indochina School of Fine Arts, who no longer focus only on representing subjects taken from the myths, religious or historical of their country, but who emphasize the human figure, and in particular the female figure.

Born into a wealthy family, Tran Phuc Duyen (1923-1993) studied at the Indochina School of Fine Arts and specialized in lacquerware. He moved to France in 1954 to study at the School of Fine Arts, developing his reputation and career between the East and the West. His talent in this field was nevertheless recognized early in his career, since a screen painted by Tran Phuc Duyen was offered by the Vietnamese government to Pope Pius XII on the occasion of the Holy Year in 1950, thus increasing his reputation among the general public. Initially figurative and decorative, his art evolved towards minimalist abstraction, elevating Vietnamese lacquerware to the rank of major art.

The border formed of twelve radiating petals, alternating petals with filigree decoration and polychrome enamels of lotus flowers, and others in ivory veneer and shibayama decoration of birds among flowering branches.

CHINA, 18th century. A very rare pair of ‘qianjin’ and ‘tianqi’ lacquered wood armchairs. The oval-shaped seats rest on four slightly inward-curving legs, the backs connected to the armrests, the whole decorated with openwork in the form of intertwined ruyi heads. The whole piece is adorned with a delicate black, ochre and green decoration on a brown background using the ‘tianqi’ lacquer technique, incised and enhanced with gold using the ‘qianjin’ technique, with a decoration of lotus scrolls and bats on the borders, Symmetrical decoration of two monogriff dragons facing each other around a flower in a ruyi motif in the centre and lotus on a lotus scroll background on the seat, a frieze of Grecians on the underside.

CHINA, Qing Dynasty, Reign of Emperor Qianlong, 18th century Rare and important commemorative panel. Rectangular in shape, consisting in the central part of a blue lacquered wooden panel, presenting the auspicious symbol "Fú" (福), designating "Happiness", in relief and gilded in its center. This piece is one of the rare blessing panels of the Qianlong Emperor that has survived. Every year, around New Year's Day, the Emperor offered his blessing to his ministers in charge of the interior and exterior of the Empire to thank them for their services. After receiving the “Fu” blessing, the officials had to respond to the emperor to thank him for his kindness.

CHINA, Qianlong period, 18th century, polychrome porcelain wall vase. Rectangular in cross-section, fully enameled in a style reminiscent of sgraffito and embellished with polychrome foliage and flowers. The openwork base, imitating a pedestal, is enameled in coral and gold lacquer. In the center is a cartouche containing an imperial poem composed by the Qianlong emperor in 1742 and included in the Qianlong yuzhi shiji (Qianlong imperial compositions) praising the beauty of the present vase.
Under the base, a gold-enameled six-character mark reading: da qing Qianlong nian zhi.

Important stele in white marble with a slightly ochre patina, sculpted with a Bodhisattva seated in dhyanasana in a niche surmounted by an arcature-shaped lintel supported by two hexagonal columns with lotiform capitals and bases. The deity, adorned with scarves and jewels, is wearing a high bun encased in a diadem. Her right hand, resting on the hollows of her legs, holds a lotus bud or the sacred jewel. H. 53 cm - L. 46 cm.
