Vu Cao Dam
(Vietnamese, 1908-2000)

Vu Cao Dam was a student at the School of Fine Arts of Indochina in Hanoi, founded by Victor Tardieu in the 1930’s. He was sent to France to continue his artistic studies alongside other students such as Mai Trung Thu, Le Pho and The Thi Luu who settled in Paris.  Born in Hanoi, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Indochina in 1926. He studied drawing, painting and sculpture. He was encouraged by the founder of the school, Victor Tardieu throughout his five years of study. He also followed Joseph Inguimberty's teachings in fine art and decoration. 

 

Following his graduation in 1931, he obtained a scholarship which allowed him to continue his studies in France. He never returned to his native country and settled in France where he pursued a brilliant career as a painter and sculptor.  He lived in the south of France in the 1950’s where his work was then influenced by the work of artists such as Marc Chagall and Dubuffet.  His work has distinctly Asian characteristics as well as Western influences. With the exception of a few landscapes, Vu Cao Dam concentrated his talent for portraits, particularly of women and children from his native country.
